The Friday List - 1/13/2023
Coming off the heels of our Wednesday spotlight on a couple of Tuscan sleepers, we felt we were long overdue for another comprehensive Italian offer. Longtime readers and clients know that these are tough for us to assemble with any kind of regularity, and that bottles disappear quickly on the occasions that we do pull one together. But today we return with another blockbuster list, featuring over a hundred wines from some of Italy’s most sought-after producers and vineyards. And this time, we’re heavy on the large formats, from mags all the way up to 12 liters.
The highlight of today’s offer is an impressively diverse—if limited in per-item quantity—collection of Giuseppe Quintarelli. This Venetian icon changed the entire appellation forever, and even after his passing his brand and influence are as strong as they ever were. Whether Alzero, Amarone, Valpolicella, or any of the sweets, we’ve got something for every Quintarelli collector and newcomer.
Tuscany is incredibly well represented today, from Brunello to Bolgheri to the superstars of the Toscana IGT designation. The list is staggering, but filled with names like (and verticals of): Masseto, Flaccianello, Solaia, Guado al Tasso, Tignanello, and more. Montalcino shows out with cellar favorites like Pian dell’Orino, Stella di Campalto, Ciacci Piccolomini, Pertimali, Casanova di Neri, Valdicava, and none other than the wine that turned the entire region upside down: Soldera.
Piedmont—Italy’s cool kid these last many years—of course comes correct today. Bruno Giacosa, Giacomo Conterno, Aldo Conterno, Giuseppe Cortese, and Luciano Sandrone all bring their A games, as well as the region’s hottest producer right now, G.B. Burlotto. There are also a handful of incredible values that you don’t want to miss, so be sure to look through the list. Looking to experience the transcendent qualities of well-aged Nebbiolo? Check out the 1990 Gaja Barbaresco and 1997 Vietti Villero Riserva, both absolute showstoppers, and (miraculously) available in quantity.
