Perfection Maintained: Hundred Acre, Realm, and Schrader

Hello Collectors,

The pantheon of 100-point Napa Valley wines is dominated by the trio in today’s offer. The term “cult wine” has been severely diluted over the years, yet despite that, it absolutely still applies to these producers. Fans of these wines are loyal, and oftentimes have some connection with the ownership or winemaker behind these juggernaut brands. That, combined with a relentless pursuit of making better wines every single year, is why these wineries have seen not just meteoric rises, but longevity too.

Hundred Acre is the undisputed king of the 100-point score, having earned more than any other producer in the world. Owner Jayson Woodbridge has developed a formula for success not just with the critics, but also his long-time followers and new collectors alike. His prodigious wines are not shy, but do strike a remarkable balance that is unique to Hundred Acre. Today’s selections include what is very likely to be the next pair of 100-pointers: the 2019 Ark Vineyard and 2019 Morgan’s Way (formerly Kayli Morgan Vineyard).

If there’s any threat to Hundred Acre’s crown, it’s Realm, which has earned multiple perfect scores nearly every vintage since 2012. We had a tremendous tasting with owner Scott Becker earlier this year, and can confidently say that Realm’s best wines are being made right now, with the new winery and estate vineyards set to elevate them even further in the future. These are thrilling wines, easily among our favorites in Napa right now, and somehow still values despite their universal acclaim. Take note, though: we do expect to see prices continue to climb.

Last—and far from least—is Fred Schrader’s second tour of the cult wine circuit. His first was with his former wife, Ann Colgin, at her namesake brand. Afterward, he came into good fortune in meeting an endlessly talented young winemaker, who would raise Schrader Cellars to almost instant rockstar status: Thomas Rivers Brown. Since its earliest vintages, Schrader’s wines have been highly sought after and widely collected. Today’s offer includes some of the most difficult to find bottlings, so those looking to backfill their cellars will rejoice in this selection.
