2003 Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 1x750ml

(14.9% alcohol; 44% To Kalon): Very dark color. Highly aromatic nose combines black cherry, anise, menthol, dried herbs and bay laurel, plus a whiff of dark chocolate. Then almost surprisingly plush and ripe in the mouth, with a slightly porty dried-berry quality nicely leavened by brisk notes of pepper and spices. Finishes with a firm tannic spine but no dryness. A dense ruby/purple color is followed by a wine exhibiting notes of creme de cassis, subtle and unobtrusive oak, medium to full body, impeccable balance and everything synchronized into a lush, opulent wine that finished with 14.5% alcohol. It is not the most complex Mondavi Reserve, but it is a very satisfying, highbrow wine that offers plenty of pleasure both hedonistically and intellectually. It should drink well for another 15 years, and it may surprise me with more nuances and subtleties than it now suggests. [06/01/2013]
