Ruby-red. Pungent, deep aromas of red berry preserves and kirsch, with notes of smoky Indian spices and minerals adding complexity. Broad, liqueur-like red fruit flavors coat the palate and show a distinctly warm, slightly roasted character, with gentle back-end lift. Finishes sweet and impressively persistent, with repeating smoke and spice notes. This rich, serious wine will need equally rich food.
The superb 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Croix de Bois may turn out to be the finest example from this vineyard yet produced. Chapoutier’s single vineyard Chateauneuf du Papes represent two different areas of the appellation, with the Croix de Bois coming from the eastern sector in the Bedarrides region.. Chapoutier has adjusted the manner in which he ages these cuvees, as they are now completely aged in tank. The wine boasts extraordinary notes of ground pepper, lavender, sweet black currants, kirsch, and hints of tapenade as well as black raspberries. Full-bodied with flavors of grilled meat, a superb texture, sweet tannin, and a 50+-second finish, it should drink well for 20+ years. Both the Barbe Rac and Croix de Bois are 100% Grenache.
Anticipated maturity: 2008-2038
