(15.2% alcohol; includes 13% cabernet franc and 2% malbec; aged in 80% new oak): Distinctly medicinal aromas of redcurrant and herbs, plus a whiff of chocolate. Sweet and pliant but a bit flat, showing modest inner-mouth depth and nuance. Tannins are supple but the finish betrays a green character. From a tiny crop held down by a hailstorm during the June 3/4 rainy period. This wine was vinified by Erin Green and finished by Kale Anderson, who took over as winemaker for Jayson Pahlmeyer’s Napa Valley operations in July of 2012.
The 2011 Merlot delivers lots of hedonistic joy in spite of the vintage’s challenging conditions. A dense ruby/purple color is followed by plenty of mocha and black cherry fruit offered in a medium-bodied wine with outstanding finesse and purity. While not the blockbuster that some vintages can be, it is well-endowed, rich and noteworthy. Tel. (707) 255-2321
