Full red-ruby. Slightly high-toned aromas of black cherry, cassis, licorice, mocha and espresso, plus a note of peppery herbs. The slightly green-edged black fruit flavors show good depth and ripeness but could be a bit more pristine. Savory acidity gives this classically dry wine a faint sour edge and the tannins turn dusty on the back end. Solidly made if a tad green. (13.7% alcohol)
Anticipated maturity: 2019-2028
The 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is not terribly impressive. It is a lean, austere effort with little texture, tough tannin, and an absence of depth. It continues to amaze me that Groth’s 1985 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve was the first California wine upon which I bestowed a perfect rating, but it has been a long time since I have been able to highly recommend anything from this winery.
